Being able to enjoy the beautiful Brisbane waterways and ocean is one of the biggest highlights of the Brisbane and East Brisbane lifestyle. It isn’t all fun and games however, and there is a common problem a lot of boat owners face when operating their vessels in Brisbane, and that is not properly maintaining the hulls with regular antifouling. This can have adverse effects on both boat performance and fuel efficiency. Are you unsure on what anti-fouling is? How to properly anti-foul your vessel? Or what equipment you will need to try and maintain it yourself? We will explain all of this for you so that you are well-equipped with the knowledge to maintain your rig for years to come!

What is Anti-Fouling?
Anti-fouling is the process of applying a special chemical-based paint to the hull of your boat. The application of this paint is to prevent the attachment of fouling organisms. These organisms include barnacles, weeds and slimes. Failing to put in preventative measures in place can cause serious damage to your hull. This is why the anti-fouling application is recommended to occur at minimum once per year, however this number does vary depending on how often your vessel is in the water. We can provide accurate estimates to how often you should have your boat anti-fouled based on volume of usage.
Why does my boat need anti-fouling?
A fouled hull can have serious detrimental effects to not only the vessel, but your hip pocket as well. Having a compromised hull can cause performance issues, such as slowing your powerboat by up to 5 knots and increase overall fuel consumption by 30%. The reason these negative effects occur is without a proper anti-fouling plan in place, marine particles (algae) will build up in large quantities across the hull of your vessel, inhibiting the ability for your boat to move across the water smoothly.
Is the anti-fouling process difficult?
The anti-fouling process can be quite messy and difficult without the correct training and equipment. If planning on doing it yourself, you’ll need a suitable boat hoist in order to lift your boat out of the water and on to solid ground for you to be able to manoeuvre under safely. You’ll also need:
- Small/medium pile roller (with an extension handle)
- If planning on spraying the anti-foul on to your vessel, ensure you use a specialist facility in order to avoid the risk of inhaling harmful toxins and vapour particles
- Face mask, gloves and goggles are all necessary to protect yourself from coming in contact with the paint
- It is recommended to wear protective headwear as the paint is quite toxic
As you can see, this process can be quite difficult and harmful if not done correctly, with the appropriate protective equipment. This is where Pronto Marine Services can help.
